Requirements for an Absa Instant Loan

According to Absa, applicants must:

  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Have an Absa transactional bank account.
  • Receive a regular monthly income of at least R3,000 into that Absa account.
  • Have a good credit record.
  • Be pre-selected for the product with a pre-qualified limit above R350.
  • Pass Absa's credit and affordability assessment.

The Instant Loan is therefore not available to people who do not bank with Absa. The salary or qualifying income must be deposited into the applicant's Absa transactional account.

How to Apply for an Absa Instant Loan

Eligible customers can apply through one of three Absa channels:

  • Absa Online Banking;
  • Absa ATM;
  • Cellphone Banking by dialling *120*2272#.

For an Online Banking application, Absa instructs customers to log in, select the application or lending section and choose Absa Instant Loan. The system displays the amount for which the customer currently qualifies.

The borrower must then review and accept the quotation and loan terms. Once the application is approved and accepted, the loan proceeds are added to the available balance of the customer's Absa transactional account for immediate use.

Absa markets the product as an instant cash loan available without paperwork, although approval still depends on eligibility, credit checks and affordability.

How to Repay an Absa Instant Loan

Repayment is normally automatic. Absa collects the full repayment amount directly from the available balance of the borrower's Absa transactional account on the agreed expiry date.

The expiry date is the customer's stated next salary date, which must fall within 35 days of taking the loan. Borrowers should therefore ensure that sufficient money is available in the account when the repayment becomes due.

Absa specifically states that an Instant Loan cannot be partially repaid under its normal repayment structure. The full outstanding amount is due on the next salary date.

Early Repayment

An Absa Instant Loan can be settled before the scheduled salary-date repayment.

To request early settlement, Absa states that the customer can:

  • visit an Absa branch; or
  • request settlement through an Absa ATM.

A borrower remains liable for the initiation fee because it is deducted when the loan is disbursed. Interest may also be payable according to the number of days that have passed since the loan was approved.

Absa's short-term personal loan terms also confirm that a borrower can repay the outstanding loan early and may request a statement showing the settlement amount.

Can the Loan Term Be Extended?

No. Absa states that the repayment date of an Instant Loan cannot simply be extended. The outstanding balance is due on the next salary date and within 35 days of the loan date.

Customers experiencing financial difficulty should contact the Absa Collections Call Centre on 0861 222 272 to discuss a payment arrangement.

What Happens if You Do Not Pay on Time?

A borrower is considered to be in default if the required repayment is not made in full by the due date. Absa may charge collection costs and related charges permitted under the National Credit Act, and these may be added to the outstanding balance.

Absa also reports information about credit agreements and repayment behaviour to credit bureaus, including cases where customers fail to comply with their repayment obligations. Late or missed repayment can therefore affect a borrower's credit profile.

If the scheduled repayment date has already passed, Absa instructs customers to contact its Collections Call Centre on 0861 222 272 for a payment arrangement.

Other Absa Instant Loan Conditions

Absa allows a qualifying customer to take an Instant Loan up to nine times per calendar year, provided the applicant continues to qualify and passes the affordability and credit checks each time.

An existing Instant Loan must be settled completely before another one can be taken. Absa does not offer a top-up on an active Instant Loan.

Paying one Instant Loan successfully does not guarantee approval of the next one. Absa reassesses the customer's affordability and credit profile with every new application.

Credit Protection

Absa Instant Loans include free credit protection covering death, with a benefit of up to R5,627. The applicable short-term loan terms state that the benefit is used towards settling the outstanding loan balance and is subject to conditions, including the account remaining active and up to date.
